When a single guitar string is plucked, standing waves of varying frequencies are created.

Michael Russo demonstrates harmonics

When a single guitar string is plucked, standing waves of varying frequencies are created. When the string is touched some frequencies are eliminated and some remain.

Why does the string continue to vibrate even after it is touched?

Hint: What part of the standing wave was touched in the waves that were eliminated?

Hint: What part of the standing wave was touched in the waves that were remained?

Any wave whose antinode was touched was eliminated.

Any wave whose node was touched was remained.

Michael Russo shows us how the pitch of a guitar string changes with string length using two different techniques.
