Stranded Astronaut

An astronaut on a spacewalk becomes untethered and floats at rest 10. m from the space station. The astronaut and suit have a combined mass of 90. kg. She throws a 2.0-kg wrench directly away from the station at 9.0 m/s.

What is the astronaut’s velocity after throwing the wrench?

Select all that apply

C1. Place a check mark in three boxes to indicate the quantities that have the same magnitude for the wrench and the astronaut during the throw.

Multiple choice

C2. How long does it take the astronaut to drift back to the station?

Substitute values

C3. The throw lasts 0.30 s. Substitute numerical values into a mathematical representation that can be used to determine the magnitude of the average force the astronaut exerts on the wrench. Then calculate the force.

F = ( kg)( m/s)( s) = N
Support or Refute · Justify

C4. A student makes the following claim.

Claim: If the astronaut threw the same wrench at 18 m/s instead of 9.0 m/s, she would reach the station in 25 s.

Place a check mark in either the Support or Refute box. Justify your response using a mathematical relationship.

Multiple choice

C5. A compressed spring between two carts is released. The 1.0-kg cart moves left at 6.0 m/s. What is the velocity of the 3.0-kg cart?

Constructed response

C6. NASA spacewalkers wear a small jetpack that pushes out bursts of nitrogen gas to move them back to the station. Explain how expelling gas moves the astronaut, and identify one advantage of the jetpack over throwing tools.
